The 4 best motorcycle insurance companies in Texas

If you’re a motorcycle owner, or are considering purchasing one, make sure you have the best motorcycle insurance coverage. There are many motorcycle insurance companies available for Texas residents, so you might be wondering what’s the cheapest motorcycle insurance in Texas? To make your search easier, we identified the best options: Nationwide, Allstate, Dairyland and Safeco. To evaluate these providers, we compared average cost, coverage options, available discounts and customer service for each company

Best for high coverage limits: Nationwide

Nationwide’s motorcycle insurance keeps riders protected, as well as their bikes. Nationwide’s motorcycle insurance policies give customers the option to insure up to 12 bikes per year, making it the perfect provider for riders with multiple motorcycles. Customers can opt for coverage up to $50,000 per bike, custom bike parts up to $30,000 and even your trailer. All of Nationwide’s policies include liability, collision, comprehensive, underinsured and uninsured coverage and personal injury protection. Optional motorcycle insurance plans cover custom equipment, roadside assistance and OEM endorsement.
In addition to a wide array of coverage options, Nationwide also rewards safe riders with its Vanishing Deductible® program, which gives riders $100 off their deductible for each year of safe driving, up to $500. To save even more money, Nationwide offers motorcycle insurance discounts for motorcycle safety features, policy bundling, paying your premium in full, completing an approved motorcycle safety course and more.

Best for new and young riders: Allstate

Allstate’s motorcycle insurance is a great pick for any motorcycle owner, but it’s especially appealing for young riders, or drivers that are new to riding a motorcycle. The company’s signature Accident Forgiveness program waives a driver’s first accident without raising their insurance premiums. Allstate has proven its commitment to motorcycle safety by creating resources like the O.N.E. Sign Guide, which provides a step-by-step process to get more “watch for motorcycles” signs installed in your area. The company provides the basic coverage options, including liability, collision, comprehensive and uninsured and underinsured coverage. Riders can also choose to purchase coverage for custom parts and equipment, that also protect riding gear and attire.
Customers can access motorcycle insurance discounts by insuring multiple motorcycles, bundling policies, having a clean driving history, completing an approved motorcycle safety course and being a member of a motorcycle organization.

Best for high-risk riders: Dairyland Insurance

Dairyland Insurance is a subsidiary of Sentry Insurance, which specializes in non-standard motorcycle insurance. Dairyland is a great provider for riders with a history of accidents, because the company offers free, same-day SR-22 coverage, which a driver needs in order to to reinstate or keep their driving privileges after certain traffic-related incidents. Motorcyclists might need an SR-22 if they’ve received a DUI or are found driving with a suspended license. Dairyland offers all the basic coverage options, including collision, comprehensive and Injury coverage, in addition to replacement costs, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and special equipment coverage.
The company offers rider’s motorcycle insurance discounts on their insurance premium if they insure multiple bikes, are a member of a motorcycle group, bundle multiple auto policies, pass an approved motorcycle safety course and more.

Best for insurance discounts: Safeco

Safeco, which is under the parent company Liberty Mutual Insurance, offers some of the lowest cost motorcycle insurance premiums on the market. Basic policies cover bodily injury, guest passenger and personal property liability. Enhanced coverage policies include an impressive lineup of collision, comprehensive, medical payments, uninsured and underinsured drivers and roadside assistance coverage. Safeco is one of the few motorcycle insurance providers that offer trip interruption coverage, which covers the cost of food and lodging if your motorcycle breaks down and you’re stranded away from home. Although the enhanced coverage policy is slightly more expensive than basic coverage, the amount of coverage included means that you can ride with total peace of mind.
For customers looking for motorcycle insurance discounts, Safeco is a great insurance option. The company offers a variety of ways for riders to get a discounted premium, including taking an approved motorcycle safety course, joining a riding club, maintaining a clean driving record, storing your bike in a secure location, installing bike safety features, bundling your policies, getting a quote ahead of time and many more options.

How much is motorcycle insurance in Texas

You might be wondering, “How much is motorcycle insurance in Texas?” Texas has one of the highest average motorcycle insurance premiums of any state, with most yearly premiums falling around $749, or $62 per month. However, there are several key factors that determine how much you’ll pay for a motorcycle insurance premium, including the city you live in, your age, your accident history and the type of motorcycle you own.
To compare average monthly motorcycle insurance premiums in different Texas cities, we looked at rates for a 41 year old male, who is single and owns a home. In San Antonio, Texas, the average premium for minimum insurance would be around $12 per month. In Alpine, Texas, minimum insurance is just over $13 per month. However, upgraded insurance is significantly more costly. In San Antonio, the average premium for enhanced motorcycle insurance is roughly $62 per month, whereas in Alpine, it’s slightly lower, around $55 per month.

Minimum motorcycle insurance required in Texas

In Texas, motorcycle operators are required to have insurance for 30/60/25 coverage. State laws require drivers to have a minimum of $30,000 in bodily injury coverage for each injured person in an accident, or up to $60,000 for all bodily injuries per accident. Additionally, drivers must have at least $25,000 for property damage per accident.

Texas motorcycle laws

In order to legally operate a motorcycle in the state, make sure you know the motorcycle laws of Texas.
  • Licensure: You must have a valid Class M License to ride a motorcycle. To get a Class M license, you must already have a regular driver’s license. Before you can get a Class M license, you’re required to take a motorcycle safety class, a written test and driving test.
  • Registration: All motorcycles must be registered with the state, and have a valid and visible registration sticker on the license plate.
  • Insurance: All motorcyclists in Texas are required to have minimum insurance coverage before driving.
  • Helmets: Texas motorcycle drivers under age 21 must wear a helmet. Riders over age 21 may forego a helmet if they have the proper certification or insurance coverage.
  • Lane splitting: Texas does not explicitly prohibit lane splitting, but it should always be done safely and at a reasonable speed.

The Best Cheap Motorcycle Insurance in Texas

After conducting a survey consisting of over 1,100 insurance quotes for motorcyclists in Texas, we've found that Progressive's motorcycle insurance offers the best combination of cost and features. While the average motorcycle insurance policy in Texas costs $817, the quotes we collected from Progressive offered rates of around $645. Below, we go into the details on Progressive and other great insurers for motorcyclists. If you'd like to see quotes right away, enter your information in the tool above.

Best for most people: GEICO

When we evaluated motorcycle insurance in Texas based on price, features and the quality of customer service, GEICO stood out with the highest all-around value for consumers. Insuring a motorcycle with GEICO in Texas costs an average of $651, just a few dollars more than the average for the cheapest insurer we found. For this price, you receive coverage at a level that we believe will cover most needs for most motorcyclists.
The features we selected when gathering quotes from GEICO included both collision and comprehensive coverage, which protect your motorcycle from road accidents as well as theft and natural disasters. These coverages are never legally required — states only demand that motorists carry liability insurance to cover their costs in case they cause damage to other drivers. However, collision and comprehensive coverage is important if you care about protecting the value of your own vehicle. GEICO covers motorcyclists for liability and vehicle damage at a competitive rate.
Customer service is our third pillar for evaluating insurers, and GEICO's reputation for user satisfaction was acceptable. It has a low complaint index of 0.68 assigned to it by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which tracks every insurer's relative share of customer complaints. J.D. Power's periodic surveys of customer satisfaction in auto insurance rated GEICO at 3 out of 5 — not a top-notch score, but enough to put it ahead of most competitors in Texas.
One final note for GEICO: Based on its website, we couldn't verify whether its collision and comprehensive coverage is actual cash value or replacement cost. This can make a critical difference to how much you're paid in a claim situation. If you need insurance for the full replacement value of your ride, we suggest confirming this with GEICO or choosing a different insurer.

Best for cheap coverage: Progressive

If you just want to find motorcycle insurance at the lowest price, our analysis found that Progressive offers the lowest average premiums in Texas among motorcycle insurance companies. The low base price of a Progressive policy leaves room in your budget for adding optional extras that you might not consider at more expensive insurers.
Across the hundreds of in-state addresses we used in our survey of quotes, Progressive's rates for motorcycle insurance rang in at an average of $645, which was 21% lower than the average in Texas. Not only does Progressive start you off at a below-average premium, but it also gives you the chance to eliminate your deductibles over time: For each full year in which you file no claims for collision or comprehensive coverage, the company will reduce the deductibles on those coverages by 25%.
The rates we found for Progressive reflect a fairly high level of coverage, but the company's online form left room for a number of additional protections that offer great flexibility to match your individual insurance needs. For instance, Progressive lets you choose between actual cash value coverage on your vehicle and Total Loss Coverage, which promises to pay the costs of replacing your vehicle with a new version of it. This kind of replacement cost coverage is important if you've invested a lot in your motorcycle.
Customer satisfaction numbers for Progressive turned out to be somewhat less competitive than its cost. The NAIC assigns Progressive a low complaint index of 0.69, but J.D. Power most recently gave it a low satisfaction score of 2 out of 5. If you're confident that your riding habits make it unlikely that you'll ever make a claim, Progressive's low prices may be worth considering.

Best for motorcycle collectors: Dairyland

Dairyland's deep policy features and discounts on multivehicle motorcycle insurance make it our top recommendation for die-hard enthusiasts. While it's not the cheapest insurer of motorcycles in Texas, the average rate of $704 for a Dairyland policy pays for a wide range of coverages that may be essential for enjoying your motorcycles with financial confidence.
Unlike some of its competitors, Dairyland includes the option to get both full replacement cost coverage and OEM parts coverage. Together, these protections ensure that you'll be fully covered when restoring a damaged vehicle to its original condition, down to every part. Such policies definitely come with higher premiums than policies that offer actual cash value compensation, which takes the depreciation out of your claim amount.
However, that level of insurance may be well worth the added cost if you have an extensive collection of motorcycles. In Texas, we found that Dairyland delivers such coverage for a reasonable rate. As far as the company's record on customer service goes, we found that Dairyland scored a great NAIC complaint index of just 0.20 in 2018, while A.M. Best assigned it a financial stability rating of A+ — which indicates that the company is highly capable of meeting its financial responsibility on all claims.

Comparing Texas motorcycle insurers by customer service quality

Our motorcycle insurance recommendations for Texas aren't solely based on the average premium recorded for each provider. Regardless of your premium or coverage limit, it's difficult to judge an insurance policy's value until you actually have to rely on it in a claim situation. To get an approximation of that value, we relied on numbers from three different sources, each measuring insurers from a different angle.

What is a moped

In the UK, a moped is any low powered motorcycle with an engine capacity under 50cc and a maximum design speed of 31mph.
Moped insurance is generally quite cheap as they’re low powered, slow machines so you’re less likely to high-side out of the first roundabout.
They’re also cheap to buy, which again brings the insurance cost down – particularly beneficial for new riders
A moped can be used by a rider that is 16 years or older and can be ridden with a provisional license, a CBT and a completed motorcycle theory test.
There are plenty of moped manufacturers out there and there has been a growing presence of Chinese manufacturers, who often offer more affordable models – a big selling point in an extremely price-sensitive market.
Lexmoto are one such Chinese manufacturer and offer a number of moped models that can be picked up for less than £1000, including the Echo 50 and Nano 50 scooters, or the Hunter50 and Aspire 50 motorcycles.
Sinnis are another popular Chinese outfit and currently have the Street 50 and Jet II, both available for under £1500.
Mopeds from European manufacturer Aprilia are also a popular option with the SR 50R proving to be a sporty looking machine. Another notable moped manufacturer is Peugeot, who offer the popular Speedfight 4, Django, Tweet and Kisbee ranges of machines.

Do you need insurance for a moped

All motorised vehicles used on public roads will require valid insurance to be legally used. Insurance remains one of those aspects you purchase in the hope you will never need it. Yet, that doesn’t mean you should take the subject lightly. You still need to think carefully about what you are doing, because should the time come that you do need it, the right policy makes all the difference. Read our full article on motorcycle insurance cover types explained if you’re unsure on which cover is best for you.

So, how much is moped insurance

Sadly, as with car insurance, young riders just starting on their moped ownership cannot escape the initial expense. New riders pay far more than anyone else on the road. With inexperience abound, insurers see younger moped riders as high risk – basically, you are more likely to crash and therefore claim from your insurer according to their statistics.
On a similar note, you will not be entitled to any no claims discounts or no claims bonuses yet as these have to be built up.
Prices for your cover will fluctuate wildly between firms but don’t let that put you off, as there are certain things you can do to keep the cost price as low as possible.

What’s cheaper to insure a moped or a scooter

There seems to be a lot of confusion over what is cheaper to insure between a scooter and a moped, and the simple answer is mopeds are cheaper to insure as they are seen as a lower risk; typically mopeds are cheaper than scooters and generally have smaller engines (50cc or less).

How can I get cheaper moped insurance

Many riders of small machines are new to the road or new to two wheels and both these factors will increase the cost of their scooter insurance or moped insurance. The only things that can help here to save you cash are to pass the test to get a full licence for your moped or scooter, and get some advanced riding instruction from an approved training body.
Scooters and mopeds are popular targets for thieves or joyriders, so make sure you buy a decent chain and lock (find them in the MCN Shop). Most scooters have space under the seat to carry a heavy duty lock, so there’s no excuses. If you buy an approved security device insurers could reduce the level of premium charged.
Shop around. You can compare and save on comprehensive moped insurance cover with MCN Compare. We compare against all the top insurers in one place to ensure you get the cheapest cover possible. See for yourself, get an online quote with MCN Compare (online and over the phone).

What is a sports bike?

Generally speaking, sports bikes are designed to go fast and usually demonstrate the best in current motorcycle technology. They are often swathed with all the latest tech and parts and are designed to help racers cut lap times. Sports bikes are very focused machines and can be harsh to ride and uncomfortable when covering big distances but are the weapon of choice for those who race and who also often might do trackdays.
Most large manufacturers offer at least one sports bike in their range and it usually represents their flagship motorcycle with race-derived technology from MotoGP or World Superbikes.

How much is sports bike insurance?

With high speed often comes higher insurance premiums and sports bikes are no exception to this. Their desirability also makes them prime targets for theft too bumping insurance premiums up more. Because of this, most sports bike models will command higher insurance premiums, though the capacity of the machine will also have a big impact on the premium too.

Popular sports bikes

There are many popular sports bike models from both European and Japanese manufacturers.
Popular large capacity bikes include the Ducati Panigale V4 model range, the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade and the Yamaha R1.
In 2019, BMW introduced an all-new version of their S1000RR that used Shiftcam engine technology to deliver one of the most flexible engines ever put in a superbike. Aprilia also squeezed the neutron-bomb-esque 1100cc V4 engine from their range-topping Tuono into a superbike frame to create the RSV4 1100 Factory.
From the mid capacity market comes a whole host of machines. The Yamaha R6Kawasaki ZX-6RTriumph Daytona 675 (and the new Moto2-inspired Daytona 765) and the more road-focused Honda CBR650R.

Why is sports bike insurance expensive?

Sports bikes are very attractive machines, not just in their design, but also to thieves as they command high premiums and are very distinctive. When purchasing a sports bike, it’s a good idea to think about security and where the bike will be parked too.
If the bike will be kept secured in a garage overnight it will not only save you money on replacing the bike if it does get stolen, but will also likely reduce your insurance premium too.
Locking and securing the bike can also help to reduce insurance premiums too. Using a heavy-duty motorcycle chain or even a disc lock can deter opportunist theft of your pride and joy and can sometimes be recognised by insurers with reduced premiums.
Other methods of securing your sports bike include ground anchors and disc locks.
Security markings and tracking devices can also help to identify stolen motorcycles increasing the chance of recovering the machine if it did get robbed. Alarms can also help to deter thieves too by drawing unwanted attention to them.
Sports bikes are also linked with riding fast due to their racing heritage and insurers can see this as a liability in some cases as some riders are more concerned with going as fast as they can rather than abiding to the laws of the road. We’re all guilty of going a bit quick at times but this has a knock-on effect on insurance as riding quick is linked with crashing as riders can be known go beyond their ability and have an accident.
Racking up a good no claims bonus will definitely help to reduce sports bike insurance premiums in such instances by proving to insurance companies that you are less of a liability on the roads.
Also, machine capacity will have some bearing on premiums too, with a 600cc sportsbike being cheaper to insure than a 1000cc equivalent. It makes sense to consider lower capacity bikes too if you’ll only be riding on the road as it’s very difficult to ride anywhere near the limit of a bigger machine on public roads, making a 600cc bike more rewarding to ride in many cases.
Finally, age will have an impact on your insurance premium too, with younger riders often being less experienced and more likely to ride quicker.
